Fergus girls open on the links in AlexandriaPublished 12:24pm Monday, May 6, 2013
ALEXANDRIA — The Fergus Falls girls golf team finally got their season underway Saturday as they traveled to participate in the Geneva Invite hosted by the Alexandria Cardinals.
“Considering the weather and it being the first time we had been on a course this year, the day was a learning experience for us,” Otter coach John Harris said. “We need to work on the things that brought our scores a little higher than we were expecting.”
The Otters finished in ninth place (406) out of the 10 teams that participated. Last season’s Class AA state champion Detroit Lakes Lakers finished in the top spot with a score of 312, followed by the Alexandria Black team (336) and Elk River (354).
Detroit Lakes’ Kate Smith took medalist honors as she shot a 74. Teammate Natalie Roth was the runner-up with a 76, winning the tiebreaker with Rocori’s Marja Sorenson.
Fergus Falls’ Megan Niblock led the team shooting a 92 in the 18-hole meet. Teammate Nikki Ellingson finished two strokes behind with a 94.
The Fergus Falls girls will now travel to Rich-Spring Golf Course for a Central Lakes Conference meet hosted by the Rocori Spartans Monday at 4 p.m.
