M State softball’s abbreviated season endsPublished 12:25pm Monday, May 6, 2013
WAITE PARK — The M State Spartan softball team saw their season come to an end over the weekend after being swept in a tournament that was played as a result of the teams not being able to play a complete regular season schedule that normally determines the Southern Division champion and the teams that advance to regions.
In game one, the Spartans fell to the Ridgewater Warriors 2-0.
Christine Moenkedick suffered the loss, after pitching an amazing game and allowing only three hits and two runs.
The M State offense was once again absent in game two as St. Cloud Tech took a 8-0 win.
The Spartans were unable to cash in on their hits in the game as the eventual Southern Division champion Cyclones got the win.
The Minnesota West Blue Jays ended the Spartans season in a 5-3 loss.
M State jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, but saw the Blue Jays tie it up after four innings. Minnesota West would tack on two more runs in the fifth to seal the win.
“All I asked the players to do was to come down and compete like champions and they did,” Spartan coach Steve King said. “We knew we were at a disadvantage by having only one outdoor practice, but it has been a tough spring on everyone. I certainly appreciated the attitude and the effort the players put forth in less than ideal weather conditions.”
