Otters place 6th at home meetPublished 10:59am Monday, May 6, 2013
After a two-day, 36-hole tournament, the Fergus Falls boys golf team walked away with a sixth place finish after welcoming in 15 of the top golf teams in the region.
The Otters were near the top of the leader board after day one with a score of 317, but quickly saw last year’s Class AA state champion Detroit Lakes grab ahold of the meet.
The Lakers finished the two-rounds with a combine total of 621 to claim the title, while last season’s Class AAA state champs Moorhead took runner-up honors (626) and Eden Prairie finished in third with a score of 633.
Fergus finished behind Shanley and Fargo South with a score of 642.
“As a staff we were proud the boys this was the first big meet this team has played together and we played hard,” Otter coach Ben Jurgens said. “These guys want to improve and will need to as the have others who want their shot to be on the varsity. Competition is what makes team better so we value that spirit.”
Individually, Grady Meyer of Shanley captured medalist honors shooting a two-day total of 143. Fergus Falls’ Chris Swenson finished in third with a 150 strokes, losing a scorecard playoff to Carter Smith.
“Chris swenson was solid all week. To shoot the second lowest score in a field of 96 players is very impressive. Now, we just look for consistency in all the guys,” added Jurgens.
The Otters will be back in action Monday as they travel to Blackberry Ridge Golf Course for a Central Lakes Conference meet beginning at 4 p.m.
