Otters rally cut short [UPDATED]Published 10:43am Wednesday, May 8, 2013 Updated 10:59am Wednesday, May 8, 2013
It’s hard to win close games, but it’s even harder to record victories when you allow five or more runs a game.
The Fergus Falls baseball team looked to have curved that trend Tuesday against Sauk Rapids-Rice, but the last inning proved to be the dagger in the heart as the Storm scored five runs to seal a 8-6 Central Lakes Conference victory.
“It’s just plain rough,” Otter coach Mark Aho said of the team’s recent struggles. “We just have to learn from it and move on.”
Sauk Rapids walked on the field ready to play as they took advantage of two first inning free passes to take a quick 2-0 lead. The Storm would follow with another run in the third and would hold the three-run lead through five and a half.
The Fergus bats showed life in the bottom of the sixth as Reece Johnson and Cody Breen knocked in two runs to cut the lead to one. The Otters were within reach, but once again saw their hopes dashed with five runs in the top half of the seventh.
The home team refused to throw in the towel as Fergus rallied in the bottom frame scoring four runs and loading the bases with one out. Sauk Rapids’ reliever Trevor Waldorf had ice in his veins as he dealed back-to-back Ks to close out the game.
Breen was perfect from the batter’s box going two for two with two RBI. Teammates Brady Hansen (three for four, double, RBI, two runs) and Johnson (two for four, two RBI, double, run scored) also were top offensive producers for Fergus.
The Otters will play its fifth straight game at the friendly confines of American Legion Field as they welcome in another CLC foe in the St. Cloud Tech Tigers for a 4 p.m. doubleheader Thursday.
