Semi driver in crash was put out of service earlier [UPDATED]Published 9:35am Thursday, May 9, 2013 Updated 11:38am Thursday, May 9, 2013
A semi rolled and spilled its load of diet coke bottles early Wednesday on Interstate 94 near Alexandria.
Six hours before the crash, the truck driver was put out of service at the I-94 weigh station in Moorhead, the Minnesota State Patrol said, according to a report in the Fargo Forum.
Eastbound I-94 was shut down for about five hours following the crash, which was reported at about 3:53 a.m.
Shane Bembenek, 33, of Mosinee, Wis., fell asleep at the wheel and overturned the semi tractor and trailer, according to Patrol Sgt. Jesse Grabow.
The driver then fled on foot from the crash site with a passenger. Authorities found the two men later near a rest area about a mile away, Grabow said.
