Otters split in triangular with Tech, Willmar

Published 10:26am Friday, May 10, 2013

The Fergus Falls tennis team was able to get two matches in despite early rains in the St. Cloud area, as they moved indoors at Fitness Evolution to face off with Tech, then back outdoors as the courts dried off to play the Willmar Cardinals. Missing two of their starters Jason Burns and Sam Steen, the Otters again had match-up problems with St. Cloud Tech and fell 6-1 for the second time this week against the Tigers. Even though the Otters are one of the top outstate teams in class A, Tech is the premier outstate team in class AA and had too much firepower for the Otters. However, Fergus Falls put their top two players, Jesse Schneeberger and David Schneck, at #1 doubles for this match and they garnered the Otters’ only point with a 6-4, 6-3 win. With a second match coming up against Willmar, the coaching staff didn’t want Schneeberger and Schneck to get into long protracted singles matches and be too tired out to play their accustomed #1 and #2 singles slots against Willmar. That strategy came to fruition in the Willmar match as Schneeberger won at #1 singles 6-1, 6-2 and Schneck won at #2 singles 6-0, 6-1. The rest of the Otters’ line-up went on to win their matches also to steamroll Willmar 7-0, as Fergus Falls avenged an earlier season 4-3 loss to Willmar when the Otters had four starters missing for other commitments. Jason Burns was able to join the team for this match and teamed up with Sam Rausch to win their #1 doubles match handily 6-1, 6-0. John Makielski and Brady Anderson rolled through their #2 doubles match 6-3, 6-1 and Conner Hatfield and Jake Steen matched up at 3rd doubles to win 6-1, 6-2. Jordan Schneeberger had probably the most unusual day, having to play #1 singles against Tech and their hard-hitting star Riley Bates and losing 6-0, 6-0, in warm indoor conditions with no wind. He then had to turn around and play at #3 singles on a cold and windy outdoor court against Issac Yoakum of Willmar, who uses very slow pace, lobs and spins shots at 1/10th the speed of Schneebergers’ first match. It took Schneeberger into the second set before he could get used to the completely different style of play, and he eventually came back to win that match in the third set tie-breaker 4-6, 6-3, [13-11]. Cody Drake filled in for the missing Sam Steen at #4 singles and played his best match of the season in winning with a solid performance 6-1, 6-3.

“It was quite a contrasting day today, first playing indoors in ideal conditions, but against the top team in the CLC, then moving outdoors to a cold and windy venue to take on Willmar in a match we were looking towards after our loss to them earlier in the season,” stated Otter coach Norm Newell. “Jesse Schneeberger and David Schneck continue to play high level tennis, today getting wins in both singles and doubles. Our #1 doubles team of Sam Rausch and Jason Burns are playing better each time out. I was pleased with the steady play of Cody Drake today in filling in admirably for us at #4 singles and getting a nice win.”

The Otters are now 8-3 on the season and travel tomorrow (Friday) to Bemidji for two tough matches against AA schools Bemidji and Moorhead. Saturday the Otters are scheduled to play against Long Prairie and Detroit Lakes, completing a stretch of 6 matches in 3 days.
