Warriors edge Fergus boys 4-3Published 10:58am Wednesday, May 15, 2013
The Fergus Falls tennis team played very well at the top positions, but Brainerd had greater depth in the lower levels to end up with a 4-3 victory over the Otters. No. 1 singles player Jesse Schneeberger and No. 2 singles player David Schneck breezed through their matches each scoring 6-0, 6-0 wins. The No. 1 doubles team of Jason Burns and Sam Rausch continued their high level play with their fourth straight No. 1 doubles victory in a decisive 6-2, 6-1 match. But Brainerd had too much depth and won the No. 3 and No. 4 singles matches and the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles for the narrow victory. Sam Steen kept the Otters in the match at No. 4 singles in a well-played match, but his Brainerd opponent was a shot better in a couple of games in a 6-4, 6-3 deciding match. The Otters were again playing a little short-handed without their normal No. 2 doubles team and having to move other players up.
“It was a long-hot ride over to Brainerd and just as we got there a strong wind came up for the matches,” noted Otter coach Norm Newell. “Our experienced players at the top have played in those conditions many times and just powered through their matches without concern. But I think our younger guys in the lower slots were bothered a little more by it than they should have been and struggled a bit today. Give Brainerd credit, their players played the conditions well and made the shots they needed to win this match.”
Fergus Falls finishes its regular season schedule at home tomorrow (Wednesday) with two matches, playing Perham/Wadena Deer Creek at 1:30 p.m. and Alexandria at 3 p.m. The matches will be played at the Broadway and Athletic Park courts.
Winning JV matches for the Otters were doubles teams Chris Bernard and Nathan Kaminski-Horak and Mike Mortenson and Tyler Hobbs. Stephen Godel won at JV singles.
