Warriors topple Comets twicePublished 10:50am Friday, May 17, 2013
WHEATON — The Hillcrest Comets pushed the Wheaton/ Herman-Norcross Warriors to the limit, but the home team was able to pick up two wins in Thursday’s doubleheader.
The Comets made a late charge in game one scoring 10 runs in the fifth, but the Warriors closed the door for a 17-13 win.
Hillcrest struck early scoring three runs in the first, but Wheaton would respond with seven runs of its own in the bottom half of the inning.
The Warriors looked to be cruising along holding a 15-3 lead, but Hillcrest made it close scoring 10 runs late. Wheaton was able to regain its composure and finish off the game for the victory.
Skyler Ruf and Jared Christenson each went three for four with three RBI for the Comets, while teammate Caleb Mathison went three for four with two runs batted in.
Game two saw Wheaton pitcher Cameron Maudal shutout the Comets in a 10-0 win.
Maudal looked to be in a pitchers’ duel with Hillcrest’s Connor Aasness until the Warriors broke through in the fourth with six runs and followed with four runs in the fifth.
“I thought Connor pitched very well the second game for us,” Comet coach Steve Undseth said. “We had three errors in the fourth inning to let in six unearned runs and another error in the fifth that cost us two more unearned runs. That has been our problem all year, turning an inning with little or no damage into a disastrous one.”
The Comets will hope that a return home will do it good as they host Clinton-Graceville-Beardsley in a 4 p.m. doubleheader.
