Twins’ give grant to Fergus baseball [UPDATED]Published 9:17am Tuesday, May 21, 2013 Updated 11:19am Tuesday, May 21, 2013
The Minnesota Twins Community Fund Committee selected the Fergus Falls Youth Baseball Organization to receive a $10,000 grant award from its “Fields for Kids Program” for funding part of the Field #6 Youth Baseball renovation project at DeLagoon Park this coming summer.
The Fergus Falls Youth Baseball Organization is working closely with the City of Fergus Falls at this time to expand the original improvement plan that was approved by the City Council in April.
The original plan was to just “grass-out” the infield with good drainage, build a permanent pitcher’s mound & batter’s box area and put in some additional irrigation. However, since that first phase was approved we are moving forward with the plans for more work; including new fencing, new dugouts, new backstop and a new batting cage as well.
The total cost of all these improvements is in excess of $90,000 and the Fergus Falls Park & Recreation Administration is presently conducting the bid process for this additional phase of the project and assisting the Fergus Falls Youth Baseball Organization.
Because the Fergus Falls Youth Baseball Organization is funding the work in it’s entirety, we are in the process of fundraising. The fundraising is going very well because of the amazing generosity of Fergus Falls and Underwood communities. We are having a fundraising event at the Fergus Falls Eagle’s Club on Wednesday which is a “Pork Chop Feed and Raffle” from 5:30-7:30 p.m.
The Underwood Lion’s Club will be cooking the pork chops and the Eagle’s Ladies Auxiliary will be preparing the rest of the meal entree for this event. Fergus Falls’ own, Dave Goltz, will be speaking on behalf of the Minnesota Twins and the Fergus Falls Youth Baseball Organization.
The tickets for this have been on sale by all the Fergus Falls baseball players for about a month, but if you have not been approached by one of them just call 218-739-2064 for a ticket. The tickets will be on sale at the door that night, too.
The work on this renovation of Field #6 is slated to begin in early June and be completed by August 15 as we work out the details with the City of Fergus Falls, who by the way having been extremely helpful to us. A larger detailed story will follow on this project during this coming summer.
Hopefully this new baseball field will be in full operation for the 2014 Spring FFHS baseball season and the Summer Babe Ruth & VFW season.
