BRANDON – The Hillcrest Comets fought tooth and nail in the opening round of the Section 6A playoffs, but after putting together one of its best offensive games the hosting Brandon-Evansville Chargers were able to respond and lay claim to a 13-11 victory.
The game set up for a true battle as it was tied 1-1 after three innings. Hillcrest found a spark in the fourth inning scoring five runs, but quickly fell behind in the bottom half as the Chargers added six of its own. Déjà vu struck the next inning as the Comets scored four runs, but again the Chargers would add one more with five.
The Comets trailed 13-10 in the final frame, but could only plate one more run before the end of the game.
“Great battle tonight in the rain,” Charger coach Tim Pattrin said. “Both catchers play great behind the plate stopping a slick ball. The girls showed their character by battling back and winning this game.”
Megan Kokett led the Charger hitters going four for five with two RBI and two runs scored, while teammate Emma Friedrich went three for four with four RBI and tow runs scored. Kelsey Nersten and Rebecca Listor each plated three runs for Hillcrest in the defeat.
The Comets finish its season with a 2-10 record.
