Comets close out season with 12-5 winPublished 9:57am Wednesday, May 22, 2013
PELICAN RAPIDS – The Hillcrest Comets were able to snap a six game losing skid and close out its regular season with a win as Skyler Ruf went the distance in a 12-5 victory over Pelican Rapids Tuesday.
The game was stalemated a one run a piece going into the top of the third. The Comets were able to take advantage of the Vikings struggles from the mound as it plated five runs on one hit, five walks and three wild pitches. This inning proved to be crucial as Pelican would play catch up the rest of the game.
“Skyler once again put the team on his back and led us to victory,” Comet coach Steve Undseth said. “He had excellent control of all his pitches, walking just one batter, while striking out eight. That was the difference in the game as their pitchers struggled to find the plate on a drizzly evening, and we benefited.”
Evan Newman led the Comet hitters going three for four, while teammate Connor Aasness had a decent day from the dish going two for four. Pelican Rapids’ Tanner Grahn had two hits in the game, including a two-run homerun in the seventh.
The Comets will not wait for seeding in the Section 6A playoffs, while the Vikings will finish out its regular season against Mahnomen/Waubun Thursday at 5 p.m.
