Otters oust Vikings 9-1

Published 9:59am Wednesday, May 22, 2013

With wet and cloudy conditions, the two seeded Fergus Falls Otter softball team hosted the Pelican Rapids Vikings in the Section 8AA playoffs at Grotto Park Tuesday. The rain held off just long enough so the home team could record a 9-1 victory.

The game had to be moved to Grotto Park due to Monday’s rainfall, but it didn’t seem to matter to the Fergus hitters as it strung together 11 hits in the game.

“Grotto is a nice place to play,” Otter coach Renee Erickson said. “The field conditions were good, but if we had to play at DeLagoon we would have not got this game in.”

Fergus would take control of the game early as it scored a pair of runs in the first and second and a lone run in the third. Kayleigh Kubitz would knock in a run for the Vikings in the top half of the fourth, but the Otters would close the door the rest of the way.

Amber Boese had a great afternoon from the batter’s box going two for three with three RBI off a triple and a double. Teammate Taylor King was also two for three with two RBI, a run and three stolen bases. McKenzie Erickson led the Vikings going two for two with a walk and a run scored.

Sadie Knudson picked up the win for the Otters going all seven inning and recording eight Ks. Alyssa Huseby took the loss for Pelican Rapids.

The Otters now advance to Thursday’s second round match up against the Perham Yellowjackets at 4 p.m. in Frazee. Win or lose, Fergus will play a second game at 5:30 p.m. as it moves into the double-elimination rounds of the tournament.

The Vikings end its season with a 2-14 record.
