Panthers rally to upset Knights in playoffs

BARRETT — The West Central Area softball team was ready to put away its bats after holding a six-run lead, but the Parkers Prairie Panthers were able to rally back to take a 10-7 win in the Section 6A playoffs Wednesday.

The Knights held a 7-1 lead after five innings, but the Panthers were able to score five runs in the sixth to cut the lead to one.

West Central could not amount another run as its lead slipped away in the seventh as Parkers Prairie would add four more runs to take the win.

“It’s hard for kids to have perspective after a tough loss and I get that,” Knighs’ coach Bryan Poyzer said. “Our goals have been reached as we competed in every game this year. 9 wins is huge for our school in softball and when you consider 5 of our losses were to state-ranked teams, I think the players will come to realize how much they have grown.”

Melissa Vikesland and Amber and Abby Oberg each went two for four in the game.

The Knights finish the season with a 9-11 record.
