Otters advance to semi-final with 2 wins

FRAZEE – Focused and aggressive.

That is how the Fergus Falls Otter softball team came out to play Thursday as it defeated Perham and Hawley to advance to the Section 8AA semi-final.

The Otters opened its first game of the day with an offensive flurry as it used 18 hits to defeat the Perham Yellowjackets 13-2 in five innings.

Fergus saw a triplicate of four-run innings in the first three. The Yellowjackets struggled to answer the Otters as pitchers Sadie and Sammie Knudson kept the Perham hitters off balance the entire game.

Sadie sat down eight batters, while sister Sammie fanned two in relief. Allie Doll took the loss for the Yellowjackets working the entire game.

Fergus’ Laura Gaustad had a great day from the plate going two for three with four RBI, while teammate Gabby Stocks went two for three with three RBI and two runs scored. The Otters had nine batters record a hit in the win.

“It was great to come out that aggressive,” Otter coach Renee Erickson said. “It was the goal of all the girls to get their bats going early-on in the game.”

In game two, Fergus was able to win a hard fought battle against the Hawley Nuggets 3-0.

The game was a stalemate through three and a half innings, but the Otters would strike twice as a wild pitch and a Kristin Traiser sacrifice fly would plate the runs. Fergus would add one more run in the sixth on another sacrifice by Traiser to secure the win.

Sadie Knudson would get her second win of the day sitting down eight batters, allowing two hits and walking four.

“Hawley is a very good softball team. Sadie got a well earned victory and we got the hits when we needed them,” Erickson added.

The Otters will now take on the North’s top seed in Thief River Falls Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. in Frazee.
