Young Eagle pilots thank many [UPDATED]Published 9:25am Friday, May 24, 2013 Updated 11:30am Friday, May 24, 2013
On May 5, your paper ran an article about the Young Eagles program.
I would like to thank you and Rian Bosse for a very well written article. I would also like to thank the people who made it possible for our EAA chapter to provide 356 area students with the Young Eagles Flight experience.
First on my list are the schools involved. They provided an opportunity for us to come into the school and present the program and then arranged for the logistics of getting the students to and from the airport. Schools participating were: Fergus Falls Kennedy School, Hillcrest Lutheran Academy, Pelican Rapids ALC, Battle Lake High School, Rothsay High School and Wahpeton Central Elementary School. Without the cooperation of the faculty and administration of these schools the program could not function as it does.
The next group of people is the ground crew. It is their responsibility to keep the operation safe and orderly at the airport as well as present information to the students while they are not flying. From Erhard: Bonnie Jennen, and Micki Jennen. From Audobon: Larry Stockert. From Detroit Lakes: Don Driscoll. From Kensington: Tom Kummrow. From Fargo: Carol Myers. From Fergus Falls: Brian Schlueter, Dan Prishmann, Lawrence Deal, Jim Lein, Jim Thunselle, Dale Hanstead, Wayne Dirkman, and Ryan Olson From Battle Lake: Craig Johnson. From Wahpeton, Cindy Schreiber-Beck, Jim Aldrich, Marlin Galde, and Tom Kenville.
The Last group is the pilots who like the ground volunteers rearranged their personal and work schedules to make this program happen and also brought out their airplanes at their own expense to see that we were able to give 356 student airplane rides.
The pilots were from Battle Lake: Bert ”Junior” Overland. From Glyndon: Jay Stein. From Campbell: Eric Klindt. From Elbow Lake: Mark Haberer. From Casselton: Robert Miller. From Wahpeton: Larry Merbach, and Jonathan Klein. And from Fergus Falls: Rod Scheel, Keith Olson, Guy Olson, Dan Vigesaa, Daniel Jennen and Curt Malecha.
Organization for an event like this is nothing without cooperation and volunteers. You could not find a better group of people to work with than those listed above. This program happens because of these people.
Lastly I would like to invite everyone to join us for EAA 1174’s annual fund raiser from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on June 9 at the Fergus Falls Municipal Airport. Dad’s Belgian Waffles will be served. Young Eagle rides will be given, weather permitting, with priority given to those who have not participated in the past.
