Burglar charged with felony theftPublished 10:58am Thursday, May 2, 2013
Jon Chauncey Sheldon, 30, of Fergus Falls, who was stopped in the middle of burglarizing a rural Dalton home Sunday, was charged with two felony counts of second-degree burglary Tuesday in Otter Tail County District Court.
The residents returned to their Dalton Road home to find a vehicle in their driveway and discovered the burglary attempt, according to the criminal complaint.
The three people reportedly blocked the vehicle using their own and called 911. They approached Sheldon, who allegedly pleaded with them to not call law enforcement and offered them $500 to not report it.
Items inside the residence were trashed, and about 200 animal traps were stolen from a shed, the report says. Sheldon admitted to detectives that he also went to the residence April 25, broke into the shed to steal traps and stole an antique dresser from a bedroom, according to the report. Sheldon reportedly said he was searching for gold, silver or money.
Sheldon told authorities he returned Sunday because he thought he dropped his cell phone on the property. He didn’t find it and was removing more items from the residence when the vehicle blocked him in, according to the report.
The stolen property was recovered from Sheldon’s residence and returned to the owner.
