Nuggets sweep Ottes softball in opener

Published 11:02am Wednesday, May 1, 2013

HAWLEY — The Fergus Falls softball team walked out on the field for the first time on Monday for practice and on Tuesday, they played their first game.

The hosting Hawley Nuggets did not have any sympathy for the Otters as they swept the visiting team in the opening day double-header.

The Nuggets were able to jump out to an early lead in game one and were able to limit the Otters to two hits in a 3-0 shutout victory.

“We sent 21 batters to the plate and only had three strikeouts,” Otter coach Renee Erickson said. “It wasn’t like we weren’t hitting, but when we connected with the ball it seemed to find a Hawley glove.”

Devonie Smith and Taylor King each had a hit for the Otters.

In the second game, the Otters were able to force extra innings, but saw the Nuggets steal away a win 5-4.

The Nuggets jumped out to a 4-0 lead after four and a half innings, but Fergus’ bats woke up in the bottom half of the fifth as they responded with two runs of their own.

With time not on their side, the Otters were able to score two runs in the final inning of regulation to force extras.

Hawley was able to get the best of Fergus in the ninth as they scored a run in the top half for the win.

“We lost but we didn’t do bad for not seeing the field most of the spring. We certainly aren’t hanging our heads after this one,” Erickson added.

Amber Boese had a great game from the plate going 3-for-3, while Smith and King continued their offensive production with 2-for-4 days.

The twins, Sadie and Sammie Knudson, each took a loss in the double-header from the mound.

The Otters will have a flurry of games on tap this week as they begin with their first home double-header versus Willmar with the first game starting at 4 p.m.
