Perham girls claim 3rd straight win

Published 11:10am Wednesday, May 8, 2013

BARRETT — The Perham Yellowjacket girls continue to have early season success as they won their third straight Heart O’Lakes meet Tuesday at Tipsinah Mounds.

Perham’s team score of 181 held off perennial rival Pelican Rapids by six strokes, while Hawley (203) rounded out the top three. The hosting West Central Area Knights finished in fourth place with a 208.

Perham’s Rachel Nelson claimed medalist honors as she shot a 38 nine-hole score. Pelican Rapids’ Alexa Bekkerus was the runner-up with a 42, followed by teammate Charlotte Johnson, also with a 42.

“In looking at the scorecards, we felt that there were again too many putts,” Knights coach Kari Kreft said. “If we can secure 1 and 2 putts on a consistent basis, we will have all six golfers shooting in the 40′s or 50′s.”

The HOL Conference will now move to Birchwood Golf Course as the Pelican Rapids Vikings host their home meet Tuesday at 5 p.m.

Team Results: 1. Perham 181; 2. Pelican Rapids 187; 3. Hawley 203; 4. West Central Area 208; 5. Frazee 221; 6. Barnesville 225; 7. Breckenridge 233; 8. DGF 278

Individual Results: 1. Rachel Nelson (PER) 38; 2. Alexa Bekkerus (PR) 42, 3. Charlotte Johnson (PR) 42; 4. Becca Huus (PER) 43; 5. Elizabeth Aakre (BAR) 46; 6. Paige Mattfeld (HAW) 46.
