Warriors take two from slumping OttersPublished 10:59am Wednesday, May 15, 2013
BRAINERD — The Fergus Falls baseball team has had its struggles as of late. Playing a tough Central Lakes Conference schedule the Otters have only recorded one win in the past eight games.
On Tuesday, a combined nine fielding errors handed the Fergus squad two more losses and a very bruised ego as the Brainerd Warriors swept the CLC doubleheader.
Brainerd’s Drew Sannes celebrated throwing a no-hit shut out versus the Otters in game one as the Warriors were able to shorten the game to six innings with a 10-0 win.
Sannes fanned seven Fergus hitters and allowed three free passes in the win. His counterpart, Tim Rasmussen, took the loss for the Otters going the distance and striking out four.
Brainerd was flawless in the field and took advantage of the Fergus fielding mistakes to seal the victory.
Game two saw Fergus’ Brady Hansen become a one-man wrecking crew as he belted two homeruns, but the Otters defensive lapses gave the Warriors a 13-11 win.
Brainerd would jump out to a two-run lead in the first, but Hansen launched a shot in the bottom half to give the Fergus a 3-2 lead. The two would swap roles in the second, but the Warriors would exploit Otter errors to score seven runs in the third.
Hansen would once again lead the charge as his second homerun, a three-run shot, would highlight the Otters six-run fifth inning and would cut the deficit to two runs.
Having a monster day from the plate, Hansen would come up strong defensively as well as he was able to gun down a Brainerd runner at home in the final frame. Fergus could not find anymore firepower in the last two innings as they conceded victory.
“We will have to regroup and get ready for our game against Moorhead tomorrow,” Otter coach Mark Aho said.
Hansen finished the day going three for five with two homeruns, five RBI and two runs scored.
“Brady really hit the ball well in the second game. He and Cody Breen helped give us a chance to get back in the game,” Aho added.
Austin Hanson started for the Otters, but was relieved by Zach Thunselle after the first. Thunselle would allow 10 runs, before Breen took the mound in the fourth.
The Otters will look to change its luck Wednesday as they host the Moorhead Spuds in a 4:30 p.m. game.
