Store stabbing suspect namedPublished 11:06am Monday, June 3, 2013
Christopher Brent Yellow Earrings, 20, of Peever, S.D., was arrested and charged with eight felonies in relation to the stabbing incident last Wednesday at Family Dollar Store in Wahpeton, according to a news release from the Wahpeton Police Department.
Yellow Earrings allegedly entered the store just after 8 p.m. and stabbed the 51-year-old clerk with a pair of scissors. He also reportedly forced six people, including store employees and customers, to go to the back of the store where he piled heavy objects against the door of a small room, confining them.
Then the suspect allegedly encountered the clerk near the front of the store and assaulted her with the scissors. The clerk suffered a laceration to her neck that required sutures. Authorities arrived during the assault, confronted and Tased the suspect.
The clerk and suspect were taken to St. Francis Medical Center. Wahpeton police officer Michael Smykowski received a back injury and a laceration to his thumb during the struggle with the suspect. Both the clerk and officer were treated and released.
Yellow Earrings was also taken to St. Francis Medical Center and treated for possible drug intoxication, according to the news release. He was released into police custody Friday, May 31.
Yellow Earrings is charged with six counts of felonious restraint, one count of aggravated assault and one count of preventing arrest, according to the news release. Each offense is a Class C Felony with a maximum penalty of five years imprisonment, a fine of $5,000 or both.
Richland and Wilkin county sheriff’s offices, Breckenridge Police and the North Dakota State College of Science Police Department assisted Wahpeton in the investigation.
