Soydara, Thalmann in eighth at state

ORDAN — After day one, Fergus Falls’ Levi Soydara is just with in arms reach of the top spot at the Class AA boys state golf tournament Monday at the Ridges of Sand Creek.

Soydara currently sits in eighth with a 73, four strokes off the leader Jordan Peters of Delano.

“Levi played as solid a round of golf today as I have seen in a very long time,” Otter coach Ben Jurgens said. “He hit the ball absolutely fantastic today. Most impressively he was in complete control from the beginning of the round through the final putt. He had a game plan and systematically hit his targets all day.”

In girls play, Fergus Falls Megan Niblock struggled on day one shooting a 101, putting her in 73rd. Pelican Rapids’ Alexa Bekkerus had a good day on the course as she is in 30th place after shooting a 88 in the opening round.

Both girls are chasing Detroit Lakes’ Natalie Roth, who shot a 70 in her opening round.

At the Class A boys tournament in Becker, Otter Tail Central’s Kaleb Thalmann finds himself in the same position as last season. After shooting a 77, the Bulldog golfer is in eighth place.

The next day, Thalmann’s game fell apart as he shot a 90 and finished the meet tied for 39th. But time erases all wounds as he looks to gain ground on day one leader Grant Exsted of Mille Lacs, who shot a 68.

The Otter Tail Central girls team is at the back of the pack as a 443 team score puts them 74 strokes behind leader Badger-Greenbush-Middle River.

Leah Weber led the OTC girls with a 106 round for 57th place, while teammates Paige Weber and Jessica Lhotak each shot a 113.

The golfers will take their respective courses for one more round as the boys and girls Class A and AA state tournaments come to a close Wednesday.
