Fergus golf qualifies 2 for state

WALKER — With both the boys and girls Section 8AA tournament converging on Longbow Golf Course Monday, the Otters’ Levi Soydara and Megan Niblock were each able to punch their ticket into the 2013 Class AA state tournament.

Each team had different circumstances leading up to the section tournament. The Fergus Falls boys took second in the subsection play, giving them a chance to qualify as a team, while the Otter girls saw three individuals walk the fairway in hopes of a state berth.

The Fergus boys team showed promise as it finished out the season with some of its best rounds of golf.

The Otters would look to last year’s state qualifier Keaton Lausch and this season’s top player, Chris Swenson, to help push Fergus into the state team tournament.

This would not come to pass as the Fergus golfers struggled to find its groove as they placed only one player in the 70s.

“We felt our preparation was spot on and we were ready to go,” Otter boys coach Ben Jurgens said. “Unfortunately, team wise , the day was a struggle from the beginning and regardless of what the boys tried to do to jump start the round, the ball just was not going in the hole.”

Soydara’s 75 landed him in third place at the tournament, advancing him to the state meet.

In girls action, after two hours of waiting, Niblock celebrated a trip to state after finishing the day with an 83.

“Megan really played well around the greens today,” Fergus girls coach Jon Harris said. “She made basically every putt she had from six feet in and closer today which was really the key to her score.”

Nikki Ellingson finished her high school career shooting a 94 for the Otters, while teammate Morgan Daniels, in her first section tournament, scored 100.

The defending state champion Detroit Lakes Lakers boys and girls teams captured both titles.

“The coaching staff and teammates of Levi are very proud of him. The boys team would also like to congratulate our three otter girls for competing today as individuals and especially megan niblock who went out early and post a 83 which stood strong all day and qualified for state,” Jurgens added.

The two Otter golfers will travel to Ridges of Sand Creek in Jordan Tuesday for the state tournament.
