Mortenson makes Flyers history, wins 4 mile race

After one hour, 59 minutes and 35 seconds, Fergus Falls Flyers’ Mike Mortenson hopped out of the water and into the record books.

Mortenson not only became the first Flyer swimmer to compete in the four mile race, but he also captured a first place finish in the event.

The Flyers saw 20 members compete in the meet with several placing in the top three.

Steven Wohlenhaus (50 breaststroke, 11-12 age group), Dalton Mouritsen (100 IM, 12-13 age group) and Luke Raitz (50 freestyle, 15-16 age group) all finished in first in their respected events and age groups.

Connor Hatfield finished in third place in the two mile swim with a time of 1:00:30.07. Teammates Henry Bitzer (50 freestyle, eight and under age group), Nicole Mouritsen (50 freestyle, 11-12 age group) and Emily Reard (100 breastroke, 15-16 age group) also captured first place finishes.

The Flyers also had several young swimmers at the meet.

Fergus was able to place four swimmers in the top seven in the eight and under 50 freestyle event.

“Nice showing of our youth in this one event,” Coach Tom Uvaas said.
