The Tebow circus moves to New England

Published 9:09am Tuesday, June 11, 2013

Is Bill Belichick that great of a coach?

On Monday, reports came out that the media circus that is quarterback Tim Tebow had signed with the New England Patriots.

This came as a shock to many analysts and hardcore football aficionados as Belichick came out earlier this off-season stating that there was “no chance” that the Patriots would pursue him.

The smokescreen worked on everyone.

Signs of Tebow going to New England were in plain sight and no one gave them a second glance. First, Josh McDaniels, the man who drafted Tebow, was once again the offensive coordinator for the Patriots. Secondly, Belichick covets players that are versatile and smart such as Mike Vrabel or Julian Edelman. Third, the genius of Gillette has been known to refurbish stars and take gambles on others in hopes of making them viable components in the Patriots system (Randy Moss, Wes Welker, Chad Johnson, Albert Haynesworth). Finally, Tebow has knowledge of the New York Jets, an AFC East rival.

But still, no one gave credit to the idea.

Tebow, on the other hand, will have the opportunity to be a part of a successful team with no expectations of him leading the charge. Tom Brady is well entrenched at quarterback, allowing media speculation to focus more on what Tebow can do for New England and not when will his number get called under center.

After watching the former Florida Gator, I understand why NFL teams will not use him at quarterback. He reads defenses too late, he does not hit his receivers after their cuts and his throwing motion is horrendous. But the prospect of using a 6’3, 240 lbs. player that knows the game and is a winner is just too much to pass up.

The Patriots are not under any pressure to use Tebow, so they can tinker with his skills at different positions and different packages. Using Tebow in short yardage situations, as a running back, a tight end, an option quarterback or a special teams player were all ideas exhausted by the Jets last season, but Tebow was unable to see the field.

This may be the last chance for Tebow to grind out an NFL career. Otherwise, he will go down as a failed experiment that gave use a trendy pose.
