Alleged DeLagoon burglar charged [UPDATED]Published 4:37am Monday, July 8, 2013 Updated 6:40am Monday, July 8, 2013
A Fergus Falls man was charged in connection with a burglary of the DeLagoon Park concession stand and stolen pickup.
Matthew Jon Alden Hamilton, 35, was charged June 28 in Otter Tail County District Court with theft and third-degree burglary, both felonies.
According to the criminal complaint, Hamilton admitted to police that he and a 12-year-old boy broke into the concession building May 31 and filled two garbage bags with candy. They allegedly gained access when the 12-year-old kicked in an air conditioner, Hamilton reportedly told authorities. Hamilton allegedly stole numerous candy bars, $20 cash and beef jerky sticks from the building.
Authorities tracked down Hamilton through video surveillance at the Fergus Falls Walmart, where he reportedly bought 14 cans of black spray paint which were found June 26 near Pebble Lake Golf Course. The video also showed the truck he drove matched a stolen pickup that was taken May 28 from Pebble Lake Road, the report says.
Hamilton reportedly told police June 27 that he knew the pickup was stolen, but that it was the 12-year-old boy who had taken it. Hamilton allegedly attempted to spray paint the pickup black then threw the cans into the woods.
Hamilton’s next court appearance is scheduled for Monday, July 8.
