Bergets find peace on Pickerel [UPDATED]Published 4:37am Monday, July 8, 2013 Updated 6:41am Monday, July 8, 2013
Sometimes the best things aren’t the most popular or well known. Larry and Judy Berget have found that to be true here when it comes to lakes and lake homes in Otter Tail County.
The Bergets are entering their 19th year on Pickerel Lake — 17 of those were spent in a cabin they had worked many additions onto. Now the couple has a lake home, which they built nearly two years ago, on five acres overlooking the east side of the lake and that keeps them plenty busy.
“We love the lake,” Judy said.
“Pickerel is about as good as it gets,” Larry said.
They chose the area based on Judy’s experience when she was younger. When it came to selecting a lake, the couple decided against the popular choice of Otter Tail Lake and chose Pickerel. They have loved that decision ever since.
“It’s peaceful here,” Judy said. “When all the summer people go home, it gets really nice.”
“It’s not so much of a big lake, so you don’t get the big waves,” Larry said.
Pickerel is a 829-acre lake west of Ottertail city. With a clarity depth of 9 to 11 feet, the lake creates a pure getaway for outdoor enthusiasts.
For the Bergets, the lake provides entertainment for their kids and grandchildren as well. Larry and Judy, who bought and sold “fixer-uppers” for 30 years, keep busy with lake toys, but also by maintaining their home and landscaping. The recent addition of a pergola has brought even more enjoyment to their lives outdoors.
A garage off the driveway, which is home to some of Larry’s vehicles and an elevator he installed himself, is the center of Larry’s work life around the home. Just around the corner is a patio and the entrance to a game room fitted with pool table and dart board.
“There’s enough work here to keep me busy,” Larry said. “I enjoy it. That’s why I fixed up homes.”
With their grandchildren calling out as they jumped from a floating deck in the water, the couple overlooks the winding steps that lead to the shore. Their family enjoys the warm weather swimming and floating in the sun as the peaceful water shimmers. It’s the perfect way to celebrate the Fourth of July holiday week and Larry’s upcoming 70th birthday.
It’s that mixture of peace, quiet and family fun that makes their lake house feel like home.
“We like it here,” Larry said. “It’s just a nice, peaceful lake.”
“You can hear a pin drop sometimes,” Judy added with a smile.
