Hurricanes swept in Coors Lite ClassicPublished 10:36am Monday, July 15, 2013
SHAKOPEE — The Fergus Falls Hurricanes have dominated the Countryside League, holding a undefeated 16-0 record.
Outside league play is a different story.
The Hurricanes dropped three close games as it was swept at the Coors Lite Classic in Shakopee and Jordan over the weekend, moving the non-league record to 1-5.
In its first game, Fergus’ rally fell short as the Cold Spring Springers won a 3-2 pitcher’s duel.
After five innings, ‘Canes’ pitcher Casey Kowalski and Springers’ hurler Ryan Morse had batters off kilter as it remained a stalemate until the sixth inning. The Springers were able to tally three runs as a walk and infield error sparked the home team’s offense.
Fergus attempted a rally in the top of the seventh as Jake Erickson knocked in two runs with one out. The Springers were able to get the next batter to ground into a double play for the win.
The Hurricanes second game of the weekend saw it jump out to a lead, but falter in the bottom half, losing 2-1 to the Shakopee Indians.
In the sixth, Fergus scored its lone run on a infield error that scored Alex Hensch. Shakopee’s Troy Wasiloski put the Indians on top as slapped a double into the gap, scoring two.
Fergus pitcher Darin Stanislawski received his first loss of the year as he went the distance, allowing four hits and two earned.
In the team’s final game of the tourney, the St. Michael Saints used its early offensive output to top the ‘Canes 7-5.
The Saints jumped out to a three-run lead after one and a half played, but Fergus would respond with run in the home half as a Kowalski single scored one.
St. Michael’s would add three more in the third. Fergus would attempt to storm back as Stanislawski knocked in a run, followed by a Kowalski bases clearly double, scoring three. The ‘Canes were unable to plate another run, ending its chances to stop the sweep.
Kowalski had a great game from the plate going two for three with four RBI, while teammate Hensch went three for four with three bags swiped.
The Hurricanes will return home Friday for the the beginning of the Countryside League playoffs as it hosts the Pelican Rapids Lakers at 7:30 p.m.
