RICHFIELD — Competing against both large size and exceptional quality, Cal Mouritsen was able to qualify for the Zone meet after great swims at the Minnesota Regional A and B State Swimming Championships over the weekend.

Mouritsen competed in the senior division and finished 22nd (:25.57) in the 50 meter freestyle and 17th (:55.59) in the 100 meter freestyle. His times qualified him for the zone meet in Bismarck, North Dakota next weekend.

Teammate Joe Kitzman had a solid time of 1:04.43 in the 100 meter backstroke, but missed qualifying for zones by two places, finishing in 10th.

“It was a great showing by these 12 swimmers and I hope this will be something to build on their future successes in swimming,” Flyers coach Tom Uvaas said.

The Flyers’ Tyler Pyle, who qualified last week for the regional meet, surprised coaches and spectators as he won his heat in the 200 meter breaststroke and finished the meet with a time of 2:57.09. This was Pyle’s first appearance at this level of swimming.

Abby Fisher swam her best time in the 100 meter backstroke with an 1:11.20.

The Flyers also saw three relay teams compete at the meet.

The Men’s 200 meter medley relay team of Kitzman, Pyle, Mike Mortenson and Austin Tabbut were seeded in the finals and finished with a time of 2:05.13.

The Men’s 400 meter freestyle relay team of Dalton and Cal Mouritsen, Mortenson and Fisher were able to break the four minute mark with a time of 3:56.8.

The Women’s 200 meter medley relay team of Fisher, Emily Reard, Summer Kalenberg and Dani Ross won its heat and finished with a time of 2:17.25.

The Flyers also saw two alumni swim in the meet. Erik Money (St. Olaf) had a strong 50 meter freestyle and Jake Fisher (University of North Dakota) swam in the 100 meter freestyle.
