After dominating the Countryside League throughout the summer, the Fergus Falls Hurricanes face elimination as it split in weekend playoff action.

On Friday evening, Fergus welcomed the Pelican Rapids Lakers for an opening round match up. With a sporadic downpours and no letup in sight, the game was postponed after one inning of play.

The game would resume Saturday and the ‘Canes were able to rally late to beat the visiting Lakers 2-1.

The ‘Canes home field advantage was minimal as Fergus had to move the game from American Legion Field at DeLagoon Park to the M State – Fergus Falls baseball field.

The Lakers would strike first as it loaded the bases and saw a past ball score Cole Anderson from third. Fergus was able to escape the inning before any more damage could occur.

Pelican Rapids’ Alex Johnson looked to have Fergus’ number as he held the home team scoreless for seven innings, but the eighth inning prove to be costly. After a Dan Revering single and a bunt to move the runner to second, Casey Kowalski hit an RBI single and found his way home after a Kyle Shaikoski fielder’s choice.

The Lakers threaten Fergus in the top of the ninth, putting runners on first and third with one out, but Kowalski was able to get Dana Johnson to hit into a 5-4-2 double play to end the game.

Kowalski was awarded the win, pitching eight innings and fanning eight. Jake Heck picked up the save for Fergus. Adam Johnson took the loss for the Lakers going eight innings, striking out six and giving up two earned.

The Hurricanes looked to keep its record perfect in league play Sunday as it faced the Dent Wildcats in the league’s championship. The Wildcats were finally able to weather the storm as it handed Fergus its first league loss 3-0.

Dent’s Matt Schornack pitched a gem and kept the Fergus hitters off-balance as the Wildcats plated two runs in the fourth and one in the sixth.

The ‘Canes struggled at the plate, collecting five hits and had only two runners on once.

Darin Stanislawski took the loss for Fergus as he threw a complete game, giving up two earned runs and notching five K’s.

Jeff Guck proved to be the difference maker for Dent as he went two for four with two RBI in the game.

The Hurricanes now face elimination as it takes on the Lakers, a 13-3 winner over the Vergas Loons, in rematch Friday at 7:30 p.m. Location of the game has yet to be determined.
