Let’s put Minnesota nice on [UPDATED]

With the Hoot Lake Triathlon coming up Saturday in Fergus Falls, it’s important that Fergus Falls residents put on their best face.

Events such as the triathlon and the PRCA Rodeo at Red Horse Ranch Arena in August bring in visitors from throughout the state and region. The participants and their families stay at our hotels, eat in our restaurants, shop at our stores and contribute to our local economy.

In addition, participants get a good look at Fergus Falls in the summer, a time when our community’s tree-canopied streets, spacious and plentiful parks, vibrant downtown and proximity to lakes shows off well. Such participants can spread the word that our community is a great place to visit, and potentially, to live.

By being friendly to triathlon and rodeo participants, you can help to promote our image. Lakes, parks and trees can add to the beauty, but friendly, hospitable and welcoming residents can do far more to make our community attractive.

So cheer on the triathletes this weekend, and if you see one, tell them you appreciate them making the trip to Fergus Falls. By helping them, you help our community.

Many visitors to our area are repeat visitors – they have been here before and someone or something keeps them coming back. Whether it is our attractions, visiting family/friends – or events like those this weekend – our “Minnesota Nice” is an important reason to help make them loyal visitors. Thanks to all the event hosts and volunteers for helping us be a great summer destination.

Actually, most of our locals do not have to remind themselves to put on a nice face – they are naturally and constantly of a congenial, friendly, and helpful demeanor.

I grew up in the county, spent many years in military, stationed in various countries, several stateside communities, but could think of no better place to raise my family and pursue a civilian career than here.

And, visitors do notice and comment favorably about their experiences among our friends and neighbors here.
