The boy was with his mother, her friend and her toddler walking down the hiking trail near Maplewood Church when the boy ran ahead of them. The mother lost sight of the child in a matter of seconds as he went over a hill.

Deputies, the Otter Tail County Water Patrol, Pelican Rapids Fire Department and DNR Park Ranger responded to the call at 5:44 p.m.

The child was located and reunited with his mother.
