An impromtu lottery ticket purchase resulted in a $41,922 Northstar Cash jackpot win for a Fergus Falls resident.
Janet Nelson was running errands on July 3 when she decided to buy a couple of lottery tickets at the last minute.
“I figured since I’d be out of town over the holiday, that I better get some,” she said.
After checking her tickets the following morning, Nelson was shocked to see that all five numbers matched.
“It was just crazy,” she said. “It was a good thing I had that whim.”
Nelson picked the winning numbers using birth dates of family members. The winning Northstar Cash numbers drawn on July 3 were 3-4-6-20-27.
She claimed the prize at Lottery headquarters in Roseville on July 10. Service Food Super Value in Fergus Falls, sold the winning ticket.
A Northstar Cash Jackpot worth $58,148 from the drawing on May 18, 2013 (ticket purchased in Ramsey County) has not yet been claimed. Northstar Cash players have one year from the date of the drawing to claim their prizes.
To pay Northstar Cash, players select five numbers from 1 to 31. Matching the five numbers drawn wins the jackpot, which starts at $25,000 and grows until it is won. Players also win by matching 2, 3 or 4 of the numbers drawn.
Northstar Cash drawings are conducted daily after the Daily 3 drawing. Tickets must be purchased by 6:10 p.m. on the day of the drawing.
