LaDell “Dell” Donald Neu, 82, of Fergus Falls

He was born Sept. 1, 1930, in Rockham, S.D., the son of Andrew and Christina (Lagge) Neu. He attended grade school by Star Lake.

At the age of 17, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He attended boot camp at the Great Lakes Naval Base near Chicago, Ill., and became an air traffic controller. He transferred to Jacksonville, Fla., Atlantic City, New Jersey, Philadelphia, and Newfoundland, then returned to the Patuxent Naval Base in Maryland, later serving in Brunswick, Maine, and then the USS Forrestal Aircraft Carrier, serving with the Sixth Fleet in the Atlantic.

He retired from the Navy in 1969.

On Dec. 19, 1970, he married Shirley Luebke in Dent. Shirley passed away on Aug. 5, 2006.

Following his discharge, Dell worked at the GTA Elevator in Fergus Falls for 13 years, and then was a driver at Metz Bakery for 17 years, until his retirement in November of 1997.

He was a member of Stavanger Lutheran Church in rural Fergus Falls.

Dell enjoyed motorcycles, RV campers, and winters spent in Florida.

Preceding him in death were his parents; his wife, Shirley; and siblings Reinhold, Eugene, Elinor and Lillia.

He is survived by a brother, Clinton Neu of Fergus Falls; numerous nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Romayne Harrington and her family.

Memorial Service: 1 p.m. Wednesday, at Stavanger Lutheran Church, rural Fergus Falls

Burial: Stavanger Lutheran Cemetery, with military honors provided by the Fergus Falls VFW and American Legion.
