2 arrested for Burris murderPublished 11:03am Tuesday, August 13, 2013
Two men have been arrested for the murder of Scott Burris, who died from a single gunshot wound last year, according to a news release from the Otter Tail County Sheriff’s Office.
Michael Alan Burris, 64, and Michael Kyle Burris, 23, both formerly of Fergus Falls, were arrested Monday in Mesa, Ariz. by the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office on second-degree murder charges. They reportedly moved from Fergus Falls to Mesa, Ariz. around April 12, 2013.
The tipping point for the arrests in the case came from admissions one of the suspects made to other people, according to Otter Tail County Sheriff Brian Schlueter.
“This thing is still ongoing,” Schlueter said. “It’s far from over.”
It was May 24, 2012 when the Otter Tail County Sheriff’s Office investigated an abandoned vehicle where blood was found inside north of Elizabeth. The driver, Scott Burris, 33, was listed as a missing person until he was found June 15, 2012 in the Otter Tail River west of Orwell Dam. Autopsy results showed he died from a single gunshot wound.
The Fergus Falls home of Michael Alan Burris and Michael Kyle Burris, in the 1100 block of North Oak Street, was reportedly the last place Scott Burris was known to be alive. Scott Burris allegedly went to the home to pick up drugs. His phone went dead shortly after he arrived, and his van sat in front of the residence until late in the evening, when it was moved and ended up at the Elizabeth location.
Though Michael Alan Burris and Michael Kyle Burris provided false information to investigators, information revealed that Scott Burris was involved in drug activity with his uncle Michael Alan Burris and may have owed his uncle a substantial amount of money.
Michael Alan Burris and Michael Kyle Burris remain in the Maricopa County Jail awaiting extradition proceedings.
