PERHAM — The Perham Yellowjacket cross country teams will once again be a force to be reckoned with as it held its two-mile time trials over the weekend.
Senior Keeghan Hurley led the Yellowjacket boys with a time of 9:33.4, an improvement of nearly 22 seconds from last season. Senior Ben Sullivan finished in second (10:22.9) and junior Billy Beseman (10:29.5) took third.
Last season’s Division II National Champion and Class A state title holder saw over 43 runners from grades seven through 12 tryout for a spot on the varsity squad.
On the girls side, 24 runners will be looking to help the Yellowjacket girls make its 11th straight state appearance. Last season, the girls put together a great run but finished seventh at the meet.
Perham’s Sydney Karels led the charge for the girls as she posted a 12:55.5 two-mile time for first. The sophomore was able to improve her time by 19 seconds. Teammates Lizzie Fudge (13:01.8) and Mary Riestenberg (13:21.9) came in second and third, respectively.
The Perham cross country teams will travel to Moorhead Monday, Aug. 26 for the first meet of the 2013 season. Both are looking to make another consecutive state appearance.
