Rezoning approval right decisionPublished 12:43pm Wednesday, August 21, 2013
The City Council recently made a rare decision to vote against Planning Commission recommendations and will allow Attitudes for Hair to relocate and operate in a residential zone.
While we know proper zoning is important to the future of Fergus Falls, we agree with the council’s decision in this particular case.
We would rather see local businesses seek out existing buildings in areas like the WestRidge Mall or downtown, but we understand this case involves several variables that justified the council’s approval to rezone one lot at North Cleveland Avenue and Woodland Drive near the water tower.
Power lines run through the parcel, and it sits on a busy corner, making it a tough sell as a residential lot. In this case, we would much rather see a business take over than let the lot remain vacant.
Attitudes for Hair was significantly damaged in the downtown fire several weeks ago, and we are glad the Council is giving the business a chance to make a comeback in the new location.
We always want to encourage local businesses, and the lot in question looks like it could be a big opportunity for Attitudes for Hair.
The area has been planned for residential use since 1975, and we understand neighbors’ concerns that rezoning one lot could lead to a change in precedence when it comes to special requests from businesses looking to move to residential areas; however, we have faith in the system and our elected officials to ensure similar special zoning approvals do not become the new norm.
