Underwood School marching forwardPublished 12:42pm Wednesday, August 21, 2013
Underwood School is now adding yet another program to our rich selection of programs: Marching Band. Marching Band is once again back in Underwood after a 20 year absence.
Mr. Pelanek started practice on June 17th and the program has been going strong every Monday night as students volunteer their time to participate in this new experience.
Currently there are 22 students who have signed up to march in the Underwood Harvest Festival Parade which will be the first official performance of the Marching Band.
When I asked Mr. Pelanek what the most rewarding aspect of the marching band has been his answer was: “Witnessing the accomplishments of the students.
They have taken ownership of this program and they strive to be successful. These are busy kids in the summer with plenty of other activities on their plate and I am very fortunate to have them make time for rehearsal. They’re great kids, and I am extremely proud of them!”
Mr. Pelanek also credited the tremendous community support that he has received to help get the marching band started in Underwood.
He credited the Fergus Falls Band Directors for the guidance that they gave him as he planned the program as well as the Underwood School Board for the tremendous support of the music program.
There were also two community groups that were instrumental in providing resources to the program: The Underwood Lions and T.I.P. Inc. of Detroit Lakes.
The Underwood Lions donated the banner for the Underwood Marching Band Program. T.I.P. Inc. of Detroit Lakes donated the Band T-shirts and bandanas.
Next time you see a member of the Underwood Lions or T.I.P. Inc. please thank them for their generous support of the Underwood Marching Band.
What is on the horizon for the Marching Band Program? When I asked Mr. Pelanek what the next steps for the program would be, he responded “Harvest Festival and Homecoming this year, next year we will add Dalton and the Henning Summer Parade, the year after Summerfest Parade in Fergus Falls.”
He also stated that he would like to see the marching band in future years do a field show during home football games.
This is an exciting time for Underwood as we continue to focus on quality programs that allow each student to achieve their full potential. Underwood School a school of excellence … every program, every day.
