Hanson, Fitzsimmons win Viking runs

Published 9:12am Monday, August 26, 2013

Fighting the heat, mud and obstacles, Rose Fitzsimmons of Ashby and Anthony Hanson of Fergus Falls were able to standout amongst their peers as they claimed first place finishes at the Viking Challenge Saturday and Sunday.

Fitzsimmons won the inaugural Viking Crusade, a 10K run through more terrain and obstacles, finishing with a time of 51:10. Scott Kamrath, also of Ashby, took second (52:42) and Brent Blommel of Freeport rounded out the top three (56:32).

The 22-year-old Hanson was able to defeat last year’s champion, Randy Hansen, by 39 seconds with a time of 33:30 in the second annual 5K run. Hanson was runner-up last year to Hansen as the former champion finished with a time of 32:31 in last year’s race. Andrew Jennen, 18, of Fergus Falls finished in third (34:11).

Kamrath also finished fourth in the 5K run with a time of 34:39.

The mud run closed out the evening with entertainment by the group Rock Legends.

Next year’s race is moving back into the fall. Runners should circle Sept. 20 as the race’s date in 2014.
