The M State Spartan women opened its season on a positive note as it claimed runner-up honors in its home invitational Saturday.
The Spartans were able to breeze through pool play as it defeated Hibbing (25-17, 25-7) and Vermillion (25-21, 25-13) in two sets, before edging out Northland in three (25-17, 22-25, 15-11).
M State would take on Bismarck State in the championship match. After the Mystics were able to take set one 25-21, the Spartans would rally back to win the second set 25-16. The two teams battled back and forth, but in the end the visiting Mystics were able to take the crown from the host.
Cheyanne O’Neal led the Spartans with 24 kills in the tournament, while teammates Gretchen Freed and Teresa Moenkedick delivered 56 and 43 digs, respectively.
The Spartans will hit the road for the first time this season as it takes on NDSCS in a 7 p.m. showdown Wednesday.
