Knights defuse Rockets in fivePublished 9:50am Wednesday, August 28, 2013
Coming off a state tournament appearance, the Underwood Rockets volleyball team looked to start the 2013 season continuing its winning ways of years past.
The West Central Area Knights had other plans, however.
It took five sets of evenly matched play, but the Knights took down the Rockets 3-2.
In an first set that went back and forth early on, the Knights pulled away with the win, 25-18. But for the rest of the match, the two teams wouldn’t finish a set separated by more than three points.
The two teams played close in the second and the Knights came away with a 25-23 win.
Down 23-18 in the third, the Rockets mounted a comeback. After getting the ball with a kill by Taylor Leitch, the Rockets tied the set at 23-23 with Leitch serving.
Both Underwood and West Central traded missed serves and attack errors, but the Rockets took a 27-26 lead on a dig by Abby Obright and a Leitch kill that was set up by Jacey Ross. They would win the set 28-26.
The Rockets took the fourth set 25-22, controlling the pace with their passing and attacking.
With the match tied up at two sets a piece, the Knights attacked and managed a large 7-2 lead in the fifth. The Rockets fought back after a number of mental errors, but could not regain their run as the Knights took the set 16-14.
“I was proud of the girls for coming back after two sets down,” said Rocket head coach Diane Ross. “We learned a lot this first match and with a young team I’m confident they will learn from mistakes.”
Leitch led the Rockets offensively with 11 kills. She also recorded eight digs defensively and went 14-16 serving with three aces.
Kenzie Woodman followed up with 10 kills of her own. She finished the night tied for the lead defensively with Obright, as the pair managed 13 digs a piece.
Obright also went 25-26 serving with an ace.
The Rockets received solid contributions from several other players, including Karlea Thorson who went 21-24 serving with three aces and seven kills. Brianna Harhun notched 9 digs and Jacey Ross had 26 set assists, six kills and eight digs. She also went a perfect 18-18 serving with one ace.
The Rockets start their Little Eight Conference schedule on Thursday, September 5 against Brandon/Evansville at 7:30 p.m.
West Central travels to Hanckock on Thursday to take on the Owls at 7:30 p.m.
