Fingerprints on a whiskey bottle led to the arrest of a Fergus Falls man for an alleged vehicle theft.

Jeremy Todd Smedstad, 31, of Fergus Falls, was charged in Otter Tail County District Court with theft, receiving stolen property and theft-indifferent to owner rights, all felonies. His first court appearance was Aug. 19.

According to the criminal complaint, a man came home to his residence in the 400 block of West Bancroft Avenue in Fergus Falls Sept. 5, 2012 and saw someone leave with his vehicle. It was reportedly unlocked and the keys were in the vehicle.

Police later responded to a call at Cascade Apartments on East Vernon Avenue, where a person fled from the stolen vehicle, the report says. A nearly empty whiskey bottle was found inside the vehicle. Two fingerprints on the bottle identified Smedstad.

Smedstad’s next court appearance is scheduled for Aug. 26.
