Historic murders topic at museum [UPDATED]Published 4:14am Tuesday, September 3, 2013 Updated 6:31am Tuesday, September 3, 2013
The History Museum of East Otter Tail County in Perham will host a book signing and informational exhibit for Shirlee Taylor, author of “Dear John…Minnesota’s True Murder Mystery” on Friday Sept. 6 from 5 to 7 p.m.
“Dear John…” is the story of two murders and a lynching that happened in 1882. Books and an audio version, read by the late Steve Powell, will be available to purchase. All proceeds will go toward a cemetery marker for the three men who died 131 years ago in a tragedy that raised questions still unanswered to this day.
In June of 1882, the bodies of two surveyors were found in the unorganized territory northeast of Perham. A 15 year-old boy was accused of the crime. The boy left town and was chased by the sheriff who finally took him prisoner in North Dakota. He was brought back Perham to await trial but during the night he was taken from the jail and lynched. Early morning travelers reported seeing him swinging from a telegraph pole as the train moved through town.
Join Shirlee Taylor at the History Museum on Sept. 6 to discuss these and other questions. The event is free.
