544 Foundation helps support Fergus classroom resources [UPDATED]Published 9:10am Friday, September 6, 2013 Updated 11:14am Friday, September 6, 2013
Recently I sent check to the foundation serving the high school I graduated from in Illinois back in 1969. Having served on the Fergus Falls 544 Education Foundation for the past three years, it has left me wondering why it took so long for the light to go on.
We all commit to education with our tax dollars because we recognize that it is important for the young in our community.
The opportunity to enrich what our educators and our students can accomplish is what the 544 Foundation is all about.
I’ve prevailed upon my daughter, a 2003 FFHS graduate, to become a 544 Foundation member, knowing that the enhanced opportunities offered during her 12 years in our public school system provided the seeds to a career in professional theatre. We all draw from that 12-year window of experience throughout our lives. Think about it.
While the 544 Foundation has benefited from several generous endowments that provide important scholarships to students as they leave our high school for college, it is the annual support of our members that helps to support classroom resources, extracurricular activities, and enrichment experiences for all students in our public school system.
The foundation has consistently provided in excess of $20,000 annually in support of educational programming. We could do more.
The foundation enjoys a membership of 591 individuals, organizations, and businesses. With over 20,000 FFHS graduates over the years and a generous community, our goal of 500 new members is certainly attainable and would translate to a doubling of our support to the 544 district.
For the sake of our students, we hope to achieve, then surpass that goal.
On behalf the 544 Foundation, I would like to extend a big thank you to our current supporters and a warm welcome to our new members.
