Sabres dodge Otter girls rally, win 4-3Published 9:13am Friday, September 6, 2013
So close, yet still so far away.
In Thursday’s match against the Sartell-St.Stephen Sabres, the Fergus Falls girls tennis team once again saw the match slip away as the visiting Sabres defeated the Otters 4-3.
The Otters and Sabres traded wins and losses throughout the afternoon.
Fergus captured two of the doubles competition, but split two extemely hard fought matches.
Madi Neuleib and Emma Clark won a tough three-set battle with Sartell’s Anna Poplinski and Megan Lien. After taking the first set, the Otter duo dropped the second forcing a third set. With the pressure barreling down on both doubles teams, Neuleib and Clark were able to edge their foes 7-6 (9-7).
In singles competition, Taylor Leapaldt laid the ground work for the Otters as she defeated Kianan Schuchard 6-2, 6-4. Sarah Taylor looked to give the Otters a chance for the win after coming back from a set down to win the second set 7-5. The rally was short lived as Sartell’s Emma Mitzel was able to regain her composure and take the final set 6-3.
“I could not be more proud of the way the girls competed today,” Otter coach Jamie Lill said. “Every match was competitive; even the ones we lost were close. We’ll keep working to try and get some of these close matches to go our way, but even without a team win today, the girls should feel good about the way they played.”
The Otters will hit the road Tuesday as it travels to Willmar to take on the Cardinals in a CLC battle at 4:30 p.m.
