Knight boys take second in Long PrairiePublished 9:15am Tuesday, September 10, 2013
LONG PRAIRIE — The West Central Area boys were able to claim runner-up honors as the Knight cross country teams competed in Long Prairie Monday.
The Knights scored an 89, while state ranked Holdingford claimed the top spot with a team score of 70.
Alex Toms led the way for the boys taking third, while teammates Ryley Nelson (11th) and Christian Swenson (18th) finished in the top 20.
“One of the boy’s team’s strengths is in the rest of the varsity runners,” Knights coach John VanKempen said. “This would an impossible pick if you were to try to predict who would be our second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth or seventh runner.”
On the girls end, the Knights were led by Abby VanKempen (3rd) and Kylee Fernholz (4th) on the way to a third place team finish.
St. Cloud Cathedral took the meet with a 29 point team score, while state ranked Royalton came in second with an 88.
Ella VanKempen (14th), Hannah Frisch (37th), Ashton Blair (42nd), Steph Toms (66th) and Katie Poyzer (76th) rounded out the West Central girls.
“We believe we can improve as the season progresses,” Coach VanKempen said. “These boys and girls teams are close to reaching the next level of being able to compete every meet for the top two or three places.”
