Alexandria wins 1-0 in overtime over Otter girlsPublished 9:45am Wednesday, September 11, 2013
In tough, physical game, the Fergus Falls girls soccer team lost 1-0 Tuesday afternoon to the Alexandria Cardinals in a match that made its way into overtime.
The Otters dominated the first half, outshooting the Cardinals 3-2 but could not find the back of the net.
Alexandria came back in the second half and controlled the first 30 minutes of play. The Otters opened up some scoring opportunities in the final ten minutes of the game, but the Cardinals held strong and outshot Fergus in the second half 3-2.
In overtime, the Cardinals scored 4-minutes into play on a free kick from 30 yards out that went into the net just under the crossbar.
Keeper Sydney Kuehl helped keep the Otters in contention the entire night with seven saves.
Otter head coach Karoline Gustafson credited her defense for limiting the Cardinal attack.
“Our back four Hannah Baker, Kathryn Sawtell, Hannah Baker and Ashley Vaughn did a great job of not letting them get in on net,” Gustafson said.
Gustafson also credited the Otter attack of Lauren Norgren, Brittany Kollman and Sara Anderson for getting the ball upfield, despite coming up just short.
“It was a tough loss. We thought maybe we had them going into the end there,” Gustafson said. “It’s can be frustrating losing at the very end. But the girls played well.”
