Otters sweep Sabres in home openerPublished 9:54am Wednesday, September 11, 2013
It was a night of celebrations for the Fergus Falls volleyball team as it celebrated three milestones from last season and a Central Lakes Conference win over the Sarterll-St. Stephen Sabres 28-26, 25-19, 25-12.
Before the match began, the Otters handed out awards to Devonie Smith, Laura Gaustad and Brianna Rasmusson. Smith and Gaustad each went over the 1,000 dig mark during the post season last year, while Rasmusson recorded 1,500 set assists.
“The records reflect how much the rest of the team trusts these girls,” Otter coach Renee Erickson said. “That is one of our mottoes and to see the faith the girls have that there teammates are going to be in the right place, at the right time is a credit to their hard work.”
It wasn’t all streamers and confetti in the early going as the Otters fell behind in the first set 23-17. Fergus was able to battle back and finally overcame the Sabres in a tight 28-26 set.
“We couldn’t find a rhythm in the early going. After we made some good choices and our shots were going in, we were able to overcome are early missteps,” Erickson said.
The Otters started to move on all cylinders as it captured the second set by six points. The Sabres looked to have gained some footing, but the Otters used a 9-3 run to take the two set lead.
In the final set, it was all the home team as Fergus was nearly untouchable the rest of the way through, cruising to a 13 points third set win.
Rasmusson and Anna Monke led the Otters with 10 kills apiece, while teammate Kristin Traiser added nine of her own in the victory.
The Otters will be back on the road once again, as it takes on CLC foe Alexandria in a 7 p.m. showdown Thursday.
“We have that target on our back and Alexandria will be ready,” Erickson said.
