Deloris Selvaag, 82, of Vining, died Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2013 at the St. Cloud Hospital.
Deloris Mae Selvaag was born May 25, 1931, at Nidaros Township to Edwin and Emelia Anderson. She was baptized and confirmed at Nidaros Lutheran Church.
Deloris grew up on the family farm in Nidaros and attended country school through eighth grade. She went to high school in Henning, Minn., graduating in 1949.
Deloris met and fell in love with the love of her life, Donald Selvaag. They married on Sept. 16, 1951 at Nidaros Lutheran Church. They settled in Folden Township, and began raising a family — sons, Allan and Gary, and daughters, Kristine and Kay Ann.
Deloris and Don lived briefly in Minnetonka, but spent the majority of their lives together in Vining.
Deloris’ main “job” was being mom, and what a great one she was — carting kids to school and church activities, swimming lessons, etc., consumed most days.
She was very active in her church and community throughout her life. She and Don were members of Folden Lutheran Church for many years before joining the Vining Lutheran Church.
The church was very important to her and she was active in the Ladies Aid and taught Sunday school. For years she was a member of the Sons of Norway, Pairs and Squares square dancing group, and garden club.
She, along with Don, was very instrumental in starting Vining Watermelon Days.
For several years, Deloris did daycare in her home. Even after her daycare kids were grown, she continued to remember them.
Deloris loved flower gardening, rides in the countryside, reading, baking, (especially Norwegian treats) and rosemaling. For many years, Deloris enjoyed the annual family camping trip adventures. She and Don also loved Minnesota’s North Shore.
They spent countless hours with their family exploring the waterfalls and agate beaches, or waiting for a ship to pass into the harbor in Duluth.
Deloris would always put others first. She never thought of herself and kept a constant, sweet smile. More than anything Deloris loved and enjoyed her family. They were her everything. She was a constant example of hope, courage, strength, and determination, but most of all, love, kindness, generosity and selflessness.
Deloris is survived by her husband, Don; children, Allan (Linda) Selvaag of Motley, Gary (Merle) Selvaag of Moorhead, Kristine (Cal) Olson of Fergus Falls, Kay Ann (Jeffrey) Lukken of Clitherall; ten grandchildren, Lisa (Blayne) Selvaag-Parkos, Donald (Jenn) Selvaag, Erik Selvaag, Jay (Catherine) Selvaag, Benjamin Olson, Melanie (Andrew Olker) Olson, Katie (Victor Hungerford) Lukken, Kjersten, Amanda and Annika Lukken and Julia Holtzhausen; seven great grandchildren, Coleman, Brody, Alexis, Maddison, Noah, Greta and Sophie, and numerous relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Edwin and Emelia Anderson; two sisters, Lorrine Halvorson Chapman and Grace Gunderson; brother, LeRoy Anderson and two great grandsons, Grant and Wyatt Parkos.
