Otters’ conference streak ends as Cards rallyPublished 11:04am Friday, September 13, 2013
ALEXANDRIA — All good things must come to an end and on Thursday night the Fergus Falls Otters saw its steak against Central Lakes Conference opponents come to an end as the Alexandria Cardinals rallied from two sets down to win 18-25, 23-25, 25-19, 26-24, 15-13 Thursday.
“It was a great match and really hard fought,” Otter coach Renee Erickson said. “ We learned a lot of things from the match and we know we have some work to do before out next game.”
Fergus had not recorded a loss against a CLC opponent since the 2010 season and the Otters looked to continue its streak as it took the first two sets, but the tide of momentum changed in the third set as the Cardinals were able to take a 25-19 win.
The rest of the night was a battle between the two conference rivals as the fourth set saw Alexandria go to extra points to win 26-24. The Cardinals followed that up with the game winning fifth set 15-13.
“We had opportunities in that final set, but we were unable to get it done. I am very proud of our girls and the program and hope to get them refocused for next Tuesday,” Erickson said.
Brianna Rasmusson led the Fergus girls with 21 kills, while Kate Groesbeck had a great night from the service line going 20 for 21 with two aces.
The Otters will look to rebound in its second home game of the year as it welcomes in Sauk Rapids-Rice Tuesday at 7 p.m.
