PELICAN RAPIDS — The hosting Vikings saw the game slip away from them in the fourth quarter as the Hawley Nuggets used three fourth quarter touchdowns to run away with the game 56-17.
The Nuggets got the scoring started early as running back Dillon Omberg split the Viking defense for a two yard touchdown run. Pelican Rapids would respond on the next play as Ryan Bruggeman took the kickoff 81 yards for six points. After a Hobet Diaz extra point, the game was tied at 7-7.
In the second quarter, Hawley would strike twice with runs by Jordan Harms from two yards and Ben Ellefson from 13 yards. Diaz would add a field goal for the Vikings from 38
yards out to send the game into the half 20-10 Hawley.
The Nuggets continued its ground attack in the second half as Ellefson juked past the Viking defenders for a 31 yard touchdown run. Bruggeman would try to keep the home team within reach with a 15 yard carry for a score, but Omberg would break off a 36 yard touchdown sprint to give Hawley a 34-17 lead.
Hawley would close the door on the Vikings in the fourth quarter as Chris Budke rushed for two touchdowns, eight yards and 13 yards, while Austin Koenig split the line for a 19 yard touchdown run.
“Hawley is a very good team,” Vikings coach Dave Haugen said. “We didn’t give up, but they were able to wear us down late in the game.”
The Nuggets rushed for 528 yards and threw for only 42 yards, while holding the Vikings to only six first downs in the game.
Nick Thompson led the rushing attack for the Vikings with seven carries for 50 yards, while teammate Thomas Brynildson recovered a fumble in the game.
The Vikings will look to bounce back Friday as they travel to Warroad for another Heart O’Lakes Conference game at 7 p.m.
